RACING Stakes rivals should go well at Ashburton

If Awocato, Leyleigh and Rebel Lad come up to expectations at Ashburton today it should have a major bearing on favouritism for the John Grigg Stakes on the second day of the meeting.

These three early fancies for next Saturday’s limited handicap for; three-year-olds will not be rivals today but each! will need to win or at' least run very well in! their respective races. !

Awocato will be trying! open class for the first time' in the Flying Handicap, first: leg of the T.A.B. concession; double. Leyleigh is top-| weight in the Eiffelton Handi- ; cap, a race for hack sprinters,! and Rebel Lad will be competing against the hack milers' in the Chatmos Improvers’ Handicap. Awocato’s assignment will not be easy—he has not raced for almost five months—but it is hard to keep a good youngster • down. The Test; Case colt took high ranking! among Riccarton’s two-year-i olds last season when he won I four of his nine races and! earned minor place-money ini three others. Even if Awocato’s condi-! tibn fails to stand to him for!, all of the six furlongs the! chances are that the honours |i will still come Riccarton’s', way. The thoroughly | seasoned Lord Nelson, another trying open class for the first time, might carry the i day.

One of Leyleigh’s best runs should be adequate to give her victory over six furlongs in the second leg of today’s on-course concession double. This Wingatui-trained filly, which ended her first-season racing with easy wins at Rangiora and Waimate, was run down by the highlyrated Red Boy after trying to lead for seven furlongs on the testing Riccarton course! at her last start.

One of Leyleigh’s strongest rivals is likely to be Donnybrook Fair, a winner in maiden class at Ashburton at: his only previous start and a solid worker in recent training.

Although he will be racing in hack class for the first time Rebel Lad is likely to be a firm favourite for the Chatmos Improvers’ Handicap. This My Pal gelding has made a big impression in two of his three races to date. He finished fast for third to Red Boy and Sir Ribot at his first attempt on his home course last month and was a runaway winner against the maiden sprinters at Tauherenikau the last time he raced. The first leg of the T.A.B. double will be the Gordons Gin Handicap for open milers, and the first leg of the double for course patrons only will be the Longbeach Highweight. A two-year-old parade, with heats for fillies and for colts and geldings, will be run 45 minutes before the first race.
