Marathon Rugby

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. A grand total of 243 points, one suspected broken jaw, 11 referees and a bumper crop of blisters—that was the score in an eight-hour Rugby match at Hasings on Sunday. Forty third-grade and fourth-grade players from the Hastings Rugby Club organised and took part in the “rugathon” to raise about $3OO for their club’s gymnasium fund.

The Mayor of Hastings (Mr R. V. Giordi) kicked off at 8.30 a.m., and from then until 4.30 p.m. it was Rugby without a break. As players began to feel the strain—or in some cases collapse with cramp —they were replaced, but all played at least six hours of football. Only two of the 40 players did not score. The final result was a win for the yellow team, 128-115, against the black team.
