Recreation grants from lotteries

One hundred and ten grants totalling $397,485 from lottery profits have been announced by the chairman of the Recreation and Youth Activities Distribution Committee (Sir William Stevenson).

The committee considered 140 applications for grants for the provision of recreational facilities and the encouragement of beneficial activities by young persons. Three grants totalling $82,000 have been approved for immediate payment, and 107 others totalling $315,485 will be paid when work on projects has been completed and certain conditions met. The committee also reconsidered its decisions on seven earlier applications and has decided to cancel five grants amounting to $5650 and to vary the conditions on grants to two other applicants.

Parts of the committee’s policy for making grants have been revised. Now the minimum grant payable on the current subsidy rate is $lOO. For an application to be considered by this committee, the project must cost not less than $5OO, with a minimum of $4OO in unencumbered funds being raised by the applicant organisation before making formal application. The existing requirement for all applicant organisations to raise 80 per cent of the cost of their projects before making application to the committee still applies. The committee has expanded its policy further to make provision for consideration to be given to an application from the headquarters of a national sporting organisation for a grant towards the cost of running an international tournament in New Zealand, when all the expenses fall on the New Zealand national organisation. Grants approved for immediate payment include: National Mountain Safety Council (to assist compaign, from special allocation), $22,000; National Water Safety Council (to assist campaign, from special allocation), $55,000.
