Worcestershire proved a master of mathematics as well as Warwickshire when it gained a .three-wicket victory to move to the top of the John Player Sunday Cricket League. After reaching a victory target of 126 in 17.5 overs, Worcestershire’s over-all scoring rate for the season was three thousandths of a run better than the previous league leaders, Essex. Both counties have taken 44 points from 16 matches.
But Worcestershire could still see the title snatched from its grasp by Lancashire, which will retain the title if it beats Glamorgan in their final league match next Sunday. Results:—
At Dudley: Worcestershire beat Warwickshire by three wickets. Warwickshire 126 (37 overs, B. D’Oliveira 3/19), Worcestershire 127/7 (17.3 overs, R.Headley 58). Worcestershire 4 points.
At The Oval: Derbyshire beat Surrey by 24 runs. Derbyshire 151/9 (40 overs, A. Harvey 55, I. Buxton 40 not out; R. Jackman 3/35k Surrey 127 (39.1 overs, F. Rumsey 3/12, I. Buxton 3/20). Derbyshire 4 points. At Bournemouth: Hampshire beat Yorkshire by a faster overall scoring rate. Yorkshire 202/5 (40 overs, G. Boycott 61, J. Hampshire 62), Hampshire 176/4 (34 overs', B. Richards 81). Hampshire 4 points. At Hove: Sussex beat Gloucestershire by 41 runs. Sussex 201/7 (40 overs, G. Greenidge 77, E. Dexter 48), Gloucestershire 160/9 (40 overs. J. Spencer 4/29). Sussex 4 points.
