Water problem solution sought

There was no question that the council’s high-pressure water-supply system was unsatisfactory for residential and commercial fire fighting, and there were two industrial premises where a supply of 1000 gallons a minute could not be given from any group of three hydrants, said the County Engineer (Mr A. Dryhberg), in a report to the Paparua County Council last evening.

After doubts were raised last month as to the adequacy of the council’s water supply in a major fire, Mr Dyhrberg said he had discussed the position with representatives of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade <nd the Insurance Association.

Ways of overcoming the deficiency in providing 1000 gallons a minute without the necessity of a general increase in the main pressure had been discussed. There were several alternatives to be investigated, and he would report further said Mr Dyhrberg. He had every reason to expect that a satisfactory solution would be found.

No horses.—The council decided to erect signs prohibiting the walking of horses on footpaths on and in the vicinity of Racecourse Road.

Parking charge.—The Sockbum County Town Committee reported that a charge of 20c a car had been made for parking in the Racecourse Hotel car-park during the recent National meeting at Riccarton. Members felt that the charge should not apply to hotel patrons during race meetings. To pay more.— The school concession charge for use of the Sockburn Park swimming pool was raised from 3c to sc.

Section.— At the suggestion of Mr O. T. Stone and 13 other residents, it was. decided to ask for a firm price from the owner of a two-acre block of land at the corner of Barnes and Hayes Roads, as the site of a possible reserve.

Restrictions.—After hearing complaints of speeding in the 30 miles an hour zone of the Main South Road, the council extended the 30 miles an hour restriction by fourtenths of a mile south of Halswell Junction Road corner, and reclassified from 55 miles an hour to 40 miles an hour the remaining section to Islington.

More patrols.— Complaints

about traffic speeds on Kirk Road were referred to the Ministry of Transport, with a request for extra patrols, particularly at times when Templeton Farm School and other Government employees are going to and from work. West Melton.—Approval was given for the erection of 11 sodium vapour streetlamps at West Melton, subject to the approval of the National Roads Board, which would meet the $l9OO cost. Building.—ln August, 100 building permits for work worth $479,091 were issued, compared with 92 permits valued at $398,390 issued in August, 1970.
