New Zambian party denounced

CN.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright; LUSAItA, September 6. Hundreds of Zambian women, many with bared breasts, demonstrated before President Kenneth Kaunda to denounce the country’s new opposition leader, a former Vice-President, Mr Simon Kapwepwe.

The women gathered outside State House, the Presidential lodge, as Dr Kaunda returned from a 10-day holiday in a remote game reserve yesterday. While some bared their breasts, others expressed their feelings by dressing in sackcloth.

They presented the 47-year-old Dr Kaunda with a petition urging him to ban the new United Progressive Party which Mr Kapwepwe, aged 49, a boyhood friend, formed when he walked out of the Government two weeks ago.

The petition called on Dr Kaunda to detain the leaders of the new party. Some of ihe women refused to eat until they had presented their petition. Over the last few days there have been reports of more defections to Mr Kapwepwe’s cause by junior functionaries of Dr Kaunda’s governing United National Independence Party (U.N.1.P.) which organised today’s women’s demonstration. Defectors include the Deputy Mayor of Lusaka, Mr Peter Musonda.
