SCHOOLBOY CHOSEN
S. Ferguson, a pupil of Christchurch Boys’ High School, was named the Canterbury men’s basketball “sportsman of the year” at the conclusion of the knockout tournament in Cowles Stadium on Saturday night. The youngest person to receive the award, Ferguson, who is 6ft 4in tall, has been a member of. the Canterbury senior representative team for the last two seasons and obviously has a bright future in the game. He plays for the Christchurch Boys’ High School team in the B grade club competition and is the first player from outside the A grade to be chosen. Ferguson was unable to personally receive the Neil Saunders Memorial Trophy on Saturday evening because he was away with the Canterbury team at the national invitation tournament. The trophy was accepted on his behalf by the president of the High School Old Boys Club (Mr Milligan). ’
