SHIPPING NEWS

Cargo liner was “jumbo-ised”

An Interesting vessel which has been discharging London cargo at Cashlh Quay this week is the Avenue Shipping Company’s cargo liner Galway. The Avenue Shipping Company is a subsidiary of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd, which is in turn a subsidiary of the P and O group. In 1967, the Galway was cut in half at Smith’s Dock Company, Ltd, at Middlesborough—this company being her original builder. A new prefabricated section was inserted, which increased the vessel’s length by 56ft. As a result, the Galway has an extra cargo hold—six, instead of five when built. Her gross tonnage increased from 6409 tons to 9589 tons, and her cruising speed fractionally increased. The operation of marine surgery in lengthening a ship is known as “jumbo-ising.” The Galway will complete discharge at Dunedin, after which she will proceed to Queensland to Joad sugar for the United Kingdom.
