Fall of 174 in figures for unemployment
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The total of unemployed registered with the Department of Labour decreased by 174 between August 13 and August 27, the Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) said today. During the same period, however, those receiving unemployment benefit increased by 154 to 2679. The number of registered unemployed on August 27 was 4067. Male enrolments decreased by 193 from August 13, but female enrolments increased by 19. Thirteen districts have recorded decreases and eight have recorded increases, the highest being Palmerston North, where the number has risen by 84. In Christchurch, a decrease of 103 has been recorded. “There are at present 1346 male workers engaged in worth-while work with the New Zealand .Forest Service and other Government Departments,” Mr Marshall said. Vacancies recorded by the Department of Labour decreased by 52 from 2305 at August 13* to 2253 at August 27. The total vacancies recorded for males were 1545, 659 being for skilled men.
