H. K. Spate, whose term of office as Director ends in October, 1972. The person to be appointed will hold a Chair in the School and will need to have had academic experience within an academic area appropriate to-the School. The present interests of the School concern Asian and Pacific countries as well as Australia. and are both theoretical and empirical, embracing anthropology (including sociology), economics (especially of underdeveloped areas). Far Eastern history (mainly of China and Japan), human geography, biogeography and geomorphology, international relations (including strategic and defence studies), linguistics. Pacific history, and prehistoric archaeology. In addition co-ordinated research in several disciplines is being carried out in New Guinea. The Chair became vacant on the resignation of Professor G. H. Russell to take up a Chair at the University of Melbourne. The appointment is not tied to any specific area of study within the field of English language and literature, and applications are invited from those whose major interest is linguistic or literary, medieval or modern. The headship of the Depart ment will be determined by the University after consultation with the appointee and Professor C. I. E. Donaldson who is at present acting head of the Department.
