Cahill still held
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. Sept. 3. A new bid was under way today to secure the release from custody of the militant
Irish Republican Army (1.R.A.) leader, Mr Joseph Cahill, pending an immigration service hearing next Tuesday on whether he should be deported. The 51-year-old Mr Cahill, the most wanted man in the troubled British province of Northern Ireland, arrived in New York from Dublin on Wednesday night on a mission to raise cash for arms, but was barred on State Department orders from entering the country. He was taken to a detention centre in New York and yesterday was ordered to be detained over . the Labour Day holiday week-end. The order was later upheld by Judge Inzer Wyatt, of tlje Federal Court, who said that he had no authority to free Mr Cahill from the Immigration Service’s detention centre in Lower Manhattan. Mr Cahill’s lawyer, Irishborn Frank Durkan, last night tried to lodge an appeal with Judge Irving Kaufman, of the Circuit Court, but failed to make it before the close of court business.
