Union Company
Sir, —With the successful conclusion of the T.N.T. New Zealand shipping deal, the following points should 'be noted. First, the reluctance of the Seaman’s Union to participate as planned in this proposition, and second the A.T.U. and F.O.L. alliance announced in Melbourne on the same day. As the Australian Seamen’s Union is known to be the most militant in the world and is already holding that country to ransom by subversive activities this partnership presents a very real threat to New Zealand’s shipping industry. Although this move is aimed mainly at the two respective Governments the end result will be the same, for should Labout come to power they will inherit a situation well beyond their control. The decline of, Britain under the Wilson Government was due to a militant trade union movement which eventually cost thousands of Britons their once secure jobs and the Labour Party its reputation as a ruling body.—YOurs, etc., X.U.K. September 3, 1971.
