PRIZE FOR FROG

A big retail firm in Christchurch announced yesterday that it would award a trophy worth $2OO to the owner of the frog that wins the Bishopdale national frog jumping contest next month. The trophy will be in the shape of a frog and will be awarded annually. Other commercial organisations in the Bishopdale area yesterday announced that they too would support the contest by awarding prizes to children who enter the supporting competitions for the frog with the loudest croak, the biggest frog and the frog with the most unusual markings. Further prizes will be awarded for children who enter the more serious study competitions.

Besides the trophy for the winning jumper there will be a substantial cash prize intended to rival the $l5OO paid by the organisers of the famous Calaveras contest in California. The manager of N.A.C. in Christchurch (Mr J. E. Davies) said yesterday that the airline would be only too happy to fly frogs to Christchurch from other parts of New Zealand. The owners would have to be sure that the frogs were in containers that complied with the regulations set out in the Carriage By Air Act Interest in the contest heightened among children yesterday as they began searching swamps and water-filled pits 'on the northern side of the city for frogs.
