Prohibition ended at midnight in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu after having been in force for more than 23 years. The decision was made principally because of the increasing difficulty of applying the law while all the surrounding states were “wet.” The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (Mr M. Karunanidhi) said last June that the law was causing a grievous loss of revenue, an overcrowding of prisons, and an increasing consumption of harmful spirits. Madras, August 30.
