VISIT TO JAPAN
(N.2. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, August 30. Japanese officials expect President Nixon to visit Japan early next year, Foreign Ministry sources said today, United Press International reported. The object would be to ease the growing friction caused by trade and economic disputes. It would be the first trip by an American President to Japan. Rioting Japanese students forced the Japanese Government to cancel an invitation to President Dwight Eisenhower in. 1960. Government sources said that the formal invitation would be issued by the Foreign Minister (Mr Takeo Fukuda), when he went to Washington on September 19 for the U.S.-Japan joint economic conference.
In diplomatic practice such invitations are not issued until a Government has formal assurance of acceptance. White House press secretary (Mr Ronald Ziegler), told journalists in San Clemente, California, on Saturday that Mr Nixon would like to visit Japan "at some point, but no date has been finalised.”
