FIRST LIFT MEMBERS
The long association with the Mairehau Novice Wheelmen of Mr and Mrs l. L. A. Dawe was recognised Officially at the club’s annual meeting this yea r. At the' instigation of the past-president, Mr T. J. Kenny, and by a unanimous vote, Mr and Mrs Dawe were elected the first life members of Canterbury’s oldest club for young cyclists.
Since the club was constituted in 1952, Mr Laurie Dawe has been its patron and Mrs Gwen Dawe secretary-treasurer. The conditions and equipment of young cyclists have changed vastly since Mr and Mrs Dawe became associated with the club. Multiple gears and expensive tubular tyres are almost the acceded thing with novices, andlthty have a number of New Zealand championships
to compete for. 'Also, the Mairehau club's programme has developed to the extent that, it has again been asked to run the Watties Mini-Tour for the Hornby club, at present in recess. The photograph shows Mr and Mrs Dawe at the start of a handicap race on the club's usual course on Lower Styx Road. The two young front-marker, are M. Bendall and G. w. jCder.
