West Indies tour on
A New Zealand cricket team will tour the West Indies for about 10 weeks next season. The chairman of the cricket council’s board of control, Mr J. G. Leggat, said last evening that an invitation to tour had been accepted—first visit by
New Zealand to the Caribbean. The team, probably of 15 players and a manager, will be selected In January, and the tour will last from January 30 to mid-April. There will be five test matches and six other firstclass games.
“It has been possible to accept the invitation as a result of South Africa being unable to extend Its Australian tour to New Zealand,” said Mr Leggat. “While we are delighted to be making this first visit to the West Indies, the tour will almost certainly involve New Zealand in a financial loss.
“But we have felt justified in undertaking the tour in order to advance our cricket.”
New Zealand last met the West Indies in 1968-69 when the three-match series in New Zealand was drawn, each side winning one match.
