Conservation Week slogan and display

“New Zealand is in our hands”—this is the slogan for Conservation Week being held throughout the country in an effort to create public awareness of the need for protection of the environment.

As part of this national campaign, a display has been arranged in a Colombo Street window of J. Ballantyne and Company, Ltd, jointly by the North Canterbury Catchment Board and the water and soil division of the Ministry of Works.

Conservation is a leading issue now, as man realises he is destroying his environment, according to the local

section of the National Conservation Week Campaign Council. It has been realised that exploitation of the natural goodness of the earth cannot continue indefinitely. As a young country, New Zealand is fortAnate that it is little tarnished yet, but the council considers that, conservation efforts should be made now, while there still is time.

The council emphasised that conservation should be a continuing subject, as part of a way of life, rather than something on which attention is focused for only one week in the year. The local section is willing to provide speakers to address groups, on the subject of conservation, especially soil conservation and land capacity, and to suggest ways in which groups can help in a practical way to preserve the natural environment;
