It was too easy for people to get a distorted view o the university and its students, said the Minister of Education (Mr Talboys) to the National Party conference today. Publicity seemed to have the greatest Impact if it related to the actions of the fringe, and to the high and increasing costa of university education, Mr Taiboys said It made a much greater impact than if it related to the success of the great majority of atudents. “Obviously there is more news and excitement in a demonstration than there will ever be in the contribution to our social and economic growth,” he Mid. “The fringe attracts pub> llcity, publicity attracts an image, and we must not allow that to distort our assessment of the value of the university.” RESULTS CITED Mr Talboya said that musured by graduates produced, cold statistics showed that the university was a “pretty efficient urganlMtion.” From I#Bs to 1960, student rolls rose 120 per cent: in the same time the production o graduates and people gaining diplomas rose 240 per cent. One of the reasons was the increased proportion of full-time students. ____
