Divers in bid to save fish

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAN PEDRO (California), August 2. Hundreds of scuba divers armed with hammers dived into the .Pacific Ocean today and began beating to death thousands of spiny sea urchins.

An urchin population explosion threatens the great undersea forests of kelp in the Los Angeles coastal waters that provide food and cover for thousands of fish. Sea urchins are different from the crown-of-thoms starfish; the former feed on kelp, the latter on coral. Los Angeles County officials hope that the divers will be able to kill 3000 urchins an hour.
