Baghdad Note’s campaign

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand Melbourne Cup winner, Baghdad Note, is likely to begin his spring campaign in the St Aubin Handicap (six furlongs) at Sandown, Melbourne on August 14. The Wingatui trainer, R. Heasley, said this after the gelding’s gallop at Moonee Valley on Wednesday.

Baghdad Note, accompanied by Prince Siam, worked 20ft out on the course proper where the going was heavy. They strode from the nine furlongs, increasing pace over the last half-mile, in 531 sec, with Baghdad Note just shading Prince Siam. The New Zealand jockey, R. Cairns, was on Baghdad Note. Heasley said Baghdad Note pulled up well and that he was very happy with the gelding’s condition.

Baghdad Note would also be entered for the weight-for-age! Freeway Stakes (six furlongs) at Moonee Valley on August 21. “He could still start In the Freeway Stakes even if he runs at Sandown the week before,” Heasley said. The Freeway, the first weight-for-age race of the season, is followed by the Liston Stakes a week later.
