Islands cargo backlog down
fN.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 22. | The Union Steam Ship Company expected to clear the backlog of cargo for the Pacific Islands by the end of the month, said the Auckland manager (Mr R. C. Stevens) today. The Waimea and the Taveuni were both loading, he said, and they should leave Auckland by the end of next week. The company would then deal with present orders. It is believed that the Seamen’s Union has refused to allow the Polar Diamant, which is due at Auckland on Saturday with a load of Ecuador bananas, to load back cargo to the Islands. The Swedish ship is on an inward charter to Fruit Distributors, Ltd. It is believed attempts were made to arrange a back cargo but that the union refused to agree because the ship would not be manned by New Zealand seamen. The Bureau of Importers and Exporters has asked the Ministry of Transport to investigate why the Devon, a New Zealand Shipping Company vessel, sailed empty for the wreckers in Japan in spite of efforts to get cargo on her for Fiji.
