Secretary threatened

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 23. Threats of violence have been made against the secretary of C.A.R.E. (Mr T. O. Newnham) and his family since the cancellation of the ; South African women’s hockey tour, he said today. Anonymous telephone callers have said: "Bang! Bang! I You’re dead,” and “Leave our hockey girls alone, man, or we’ll get your wife.” “We’re treating them as a joke—we’ve had so many in the last few years, but they have reached a peak lately and my wife is afraid to be at home on her own now,” he said. He estimated that more than 1000 calls had been received since the campaign began. One caller had a distinctive South African voice. “There’s not much the police can do about it—they offered to tap my telephone, ibut I refused, so we usually 'keep it off the hook now,” he said. An anonymous letter a few months ago threatening violence has been given to the 'police.
