ENROLMENT AT SCHOOLS
Policy seems a success
I The success of Christchurch’s new “neighbourhood” secondary school enrolment policy seems assured, [the regional superintendent |of education (Mr H. M. MciMillan) said on Thursday. ; The new policy, which avoids strict zoning for all [Christchurch secondary schools, was made public by the Department of Education and the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council last month. It places responsibility on the boards of governors of each school to accept all pupils living “within a reasonable distance” of their school.
More than 92 per cent of the 4137 pupils affected by the policy have been accepted by the school to which they first applied. All parents will receive notification today of their child’s new school. Those who have not been accepted at the school for which, they applied will be given the name of an alternative school in which a place will be available on application. Mr McMillan said he was sure that as a result of this year’s enrolment policy, all secondary schools in the city would now have a good cross-section of the community within their rolls. “All schools have played the game very well over this matter,” he said.
