Indians win squash matches

The four members of the Indian team gave excellent displays to win. their first round matches in the Lane Walker Rud•kin Canterbury men’s open squash rackets championship last night. J. R. Taylor, of Auckland, caused the biggest surprise of the night by forcing the former New Zealand representative, D. R. Preston, to five games. Taking full advantage of some loose play by Preston, Taylor dominated most of the early play by judicious ' use of short angles and drops which kept Preston under constant pressure.

It was not until Preston settled down to his usual deep driving to the corners, that Taylor began to wilt, allowing Preston to win the final two games decisively.

To the casual spectator it may have been hard to understand

why M. A. Billington was struggling to reach so many of S. A. Ispahan’s (India) shots. Often the Indian’s angled shots were well above the tin and few of his drops were outright winners. but as BiUington said afterwards, he was never sure just where the Indian was going to play the ball. Seldom did Ispahanl attempt to

win the point early in the rally; he used his deception to move Billington from front to back of the court, always by the longest route, as though the younger player were on a string. It was a very tired Billington

t the end of 40 minutes ntrancing squash.

As J. Stevens (Auckland) defected through illness, a further

reshuffle of the draw’ was made and the expected clash between

W. Reedman (Australia) and P. N. Handa (India), did not eventuate; Reedman was drawn to play R. N. Hawkes (Christchurch). Results were:— Lane Walker Rudkin championship.—First round: S.
