Degree change considered

A new structure for bachelor degrees in arts and science will be considered by the University of Canterbury Council next week. The proposals which are expected to be confirmed by the Council will lead to greater flexibility in degree work. Moves to reduce various university departments’ reliance on the results of final yearly examinations will also be considered.

The new degree structure will mean a move away from the nine-unit bachelor of arts and the eight-unit bachelor of science degrees of the past. A wider range of subjects will be counted towards these degrees through subject options, each option counting as two papers. These two papers will be equal to one of the old arts or science units.
