Aggressive driving

Sir, —A marked reluctance to yield the right of way at many intersections seems to exist round 10.15-11 p.m., mostly between Thursdays and Saturdays. Several intersections in the Bealey Avenue area seem prone to this overexuberant behaviour. Can the Ministry of Transport explain the reasons for this aggression?—Yours, etc., CHIEF WACKA.

July 17, 1971. [Mr A. Goldsmith, traffic superintendent for the Ministry of Transport, replies: “A sample of 150 accidents in Christchurch City during 1970 involving failure to yield right of way showed that 5.3 per cent occurred between 10 pjn. and 11 p.m. Other percentages were: 8 per cent (7 a.m.-8 a.m.), 8 per cent (5 pjn.-6 p.m.), 10.6 per cent (4 p.m.-5 p.m.), 11.3 per cent (7 p.m.-8 p.m.). There appears to be no reason why intersections on Bealey Avenue are more prone to this type of offence than others.”!
