WHANGAREI, July 22. Dargaville’s newly - formed Committee on Indo-China has delayed its observance of the worldwide anti-war mobilisation day In deference to the New Zealand Army. On July 30, when antiwar demonstrations will be held in most other centres, the New Zealand Army Band and an Army recruiting team will be in Dargaville.
The committee’s decision to delay its own street march until the following Friday is not prompted by any fear of confrontation between peace lovers and the Army. Rather it is a gesture of courtesy and understanding. The committee’s secretary (Mr D. F. Mitchell) says the Army will be there as guests of the borough. “It would be in bad taste on our part to stage such a demonstration and possibly embarrass our guests,” he says.
