Legal aid review

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22.

The whole system of legal aid for persons charged with criminal offences was being reviewed, and the difficulties that some defendants might have in comprehension was one aspect of the review, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) in Parliament today. He was replying to a question on behalf of the Minister of Maori and Island Affairs (Mr Maclntyre) who had been asked what success he had had in persuading the Minister of Justice (Mr Riddiford) that Maoris and Pacific Islanders heeded assistance in expressing themselves when they appeared before the courts. Mr Gordon said the Minister of Justice was aware that unsophisticated Maori and Polynesian offenders could be bewildered by the aura and procedures of the courts.
