HIGHLIGHTS OF TRAINING Dumb-Bell sprints fast at Riccarton

Dumb-Bell was one of the most attractive trialists at Riccarton yesterday when the training of South Canterbury Hunt Club candidates occupied most attention.

The No. 1 grass took a wetting overnight, but DumbBell sped over half a mile in 51 l-ssec. This candidate for the Levels Hack Handicap at Washdvke was accompanied by Sailing Home (Mein) and the two-year-old, Eastern Clouds (A. Eastwood) At the end Dumb-Bell, which was ridden by her race rider, M. Thornley, was galloping keenly with a lead of half a length over Sailing Home

Tussle, another of Thornley's mounts at Washdvke, Enniskillen (Wakefield) in later sprinted half a mile with 51 3-ssec.

Tussle is one of the form runners in the Gleniti Stakes, first leg of the oucourse double at Washdyke,.

Persian Spy (G. R. Lee) led Lord Manfred (Lucas) by a length and Questlonner (Thomas) by three lengths after running half a mile in 54 3-ssec. Ribolita, a form runner for the Craigmore Handicap at Wash* dyke, sprinted half a mile with Bright Brocade in 54 2-ssec. Time and Tide (Mein) and Red Chips (Cowles) also recorded 54 2-ssec for the last four of six furlongs. Quetta was going keenly alongside Regal Ration and Tulak after running half a mile in 55 2-ssec. Rebel Lad and Pleasure Pal were abreast two lengths clear of Goudhurst ending half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Billy Joe (H. Reuben) and Gracious Dream (Lakin), which had the worst of the footing later in the morning, shaped well to run half a mile in 53 3-ssec. HASTINGS

Horses engaged at the Mana watu Hunt meeting at Awapuni tomorrow and at Levin next Wednesday were among the most Interesting workers at Hastings yesterday morning. Agra, Red Nib, Minraine, Consulate and Worker were among those which showed their fitness for Awapuni and Frigade, Vespasian, Wellcourt and Ima Martian pleased in trials for Levin. All tracks were waterlogged

but the plough offered quite good going from the time angle. Worker (B. Withington) and Consulate (A. Pringle) worked on the plough, running three furlongs in 40sec and then taking 39 2-ssec for another three. Dark Song (J. Panapa), which will race in the sprint at Levin as a lead-up to Riccarton, took 41sec for three furlongs and Frigate <A. Hawes), which is in the Levin Winter Cup, ran the last three furlongs of his work in 39sec.

Gay Mariner (M. Bur ridge) took 55sec for half a mile, running the last three in 41 3-ssec. He is now with M. J. Burridge and may be jumping next winter. The stablemates. Bold (R. Marsh) and Prince Tim (P. Julius), worked seven furlongs together in Imin 41sec, taking 41see for the last three. Tai (R. Marsh! worked freely over half a mile in 52 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Gamerullah (D. Withlngton) and Nullarbor (I. D. Lawson) were paired for three furlongs in :m 2-ssec.

Tudor King (A. Pringle) ran three furlongs in 45sec on the course proper and Vaimond (D. Pocock) took 40sec for three furlongs on the plough. On the course proper Greenstone (R. Marsh) took Imin 41sec for seven furlongs, the last three in 45scc and Minraine (1.. Gestro) drew clear of Dcyalta (M Lange)

in the closing stages of seven, the last three also in 45sec. Red Nib (D. Withington) took imin 14sec for five, the last three in 43 Wellcourt (I. Lawson) beat Vespasian (Julius) and Mr Spy (B. Kirke) over six furlongs in Imin 25 4-ssec, the last three in 44 4-ssec. Wellcourt was a length clear at the finish. WOODVILLE Bompa and Triton again stole the limelight from the Awapuni candidates at Woodville this morning when they galloped over five furlongs. Both are entered for Rlccarton. Work was done on the course proper, where the going was remarkably firm for this time of year. The pegs were out 40 feet. Triton was a length ahead of Bompa soon after they started their gallop but there was little between them as they coasted to the line to clock Imin 5 4-ssec. They ran the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Bompa will be ready for a bold race when he resumes at Te Awamutu, and Triton looks well enough now to win the Winter Cup. Ice Queen and Julie Royal went with Mill Bay over six fur-: longs in Imin 23sec, the last three furlongs in 41 35s ec, Ice 'Queen had the outside running

and did her work well. Far Time ran the last three furlongs of his work easily in 43 3-ssec. Banquet jumped a round of country, sprawling after clearing the last fence. He jumped it again then ran half a mile in 57 l-ssec, being eased down near the post.

Kote Maori went seven furlongs in Imin. 27 l-ssec., the last three in 42 l-ssec. Stay Red looked ready to race boldly in the McEwen Steeplechase at Awapuni when he ran a round, the last six furlongs in Imin 27 2-ssec., and three in 43sec. Classic Mission and Classic Nature in preparation for Riccarton were galloped well before daylight over three furlongs. They had plenty of speed on and pulled up well. WANGANUI Tres Joli and Bettydelphius, which meet In the Tararua Hack Plate at tomorrow's Manawatu Hunt Club fixture, were In good form at Wanganui yesterday. Trials took place 35ft out on the course proper, which was soft. Tres Joli has little form back ground but she worked zestfully with Rarula from the three furlongs in 38 1-6 sec., a soft track upset her at Wellington last time,

Bettydelpluus was a fraction slower than Tres Joli registering the last three of a’ round in 38 3-ssec. She did her work with a lot in reserve. Mystic Dancer, which will also run in the Manawatu second leg, schooled over six fences with Lord Goldwyn. A Pukehou Hack Hurdles entry Lord Goldwyn had too much experience for his rival and finished two lengths ahead. The New Plymouth-based Duke of Gloucester Cup entry, Koval luscan, came south to have his final trial with his race rider, I. Dodunski. He went over a round, ending with an easy three in 41 2-ssec. 3'. C. Perawlti came across from Feildlng to ride Prince Sudak, which successfully tried for a steeplechasing certificate. Pcrawiti is to tranfer to Wanganui next week and will assist K. A. Thomson before taking up employment outside the racing industry.
