Banana price down

The decrease in the set price of bananas, announced yesterday and to take effect today, was the largest in any iroduce commodity under the set price system that he :ould remember for many vears, the president of the Canterbury Retail Fruiterers’ Association (Mr K. A. Fuller) said yesterday. From today Ecuadorian and Island bananas will sell at 15c per lb. Formerly Island bananas retailed at 18c per lb and Ecuadorian at 19c per lb.

Bananas had become more readily available from Ecuador and the Islands and the importers had decided that they should be made available to the consumer even if this meant talking a loss, said Mr Fuller. He envisaged that the reduced price would last for a month or two until the wanner weather arrived.
