Monument to spacemen

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

GENEVA, July 21

Mrs Ekaterina Furtseva, the Soviet Union Minister of Culture, confirmed today that discussions were advancing for a docking in space between Russian and American spacecraft.

In Geneva with the cosmonaut,. Adrian Nikolayev, to inaugurate a monument to Russian space achievements, Mrs Furtseva told a news conference that several technical problems had to be resolved before such a linking could take place. Built on a platform of dark grey Soviet Union marble on the lawn of the Palace of Nations, the 60ft-high monument bears the inscription: “In Dedication to Man’s Success in Space.”

On the monument is the face of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.
