COURTROOM MURDERS
Trials to be separated
(N-ZP.A.Retiter—Copyright) SAN RAFAEL (California), July 21
After months of pre-trial delays, the black militant, Angela Davis, aged 27, and her co-defendant, Ruchell Magee, aged 32, were granted separate trials today on murder charges in connection with the San Rafael courthouse gun battle in which a Judge and three other people were killed. The delays had been caused mainly by Magee’s courtroom outbursts and his many petitions alleging prejudice and demanding a Federal trial.
Pre-trial arguments on defence motions in the Davis case will begin tomorrow without Magee being in court. Magee, a San Quentin prisoner who has studied law while in gaol, shouted threats at the prosecutor (Mr Albert Harris) today, and was taken, shouting, from the courtroom.
He told Mr Harris: “If I could get these handcuffs off. Td knock your teeth down your throat”
