Maoris and crime
Sir, —Chief Superintendent Tait has been less than judicious in his choice of words; he would not like to be thought prejudiced against Maoris. If “we are going to be in for a hard time unless we do something about the Maori people,” then the fault is ours. Maoris are not bom with a greater propensity for crime than Europeans. If the European insists on imposing his society on the Maoris, then it is not that something should be done about Maoris, but that more should be done for them.—Yours, etc., JULIA GREENLAND; July 21, 1971.
