Conversion date

/N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. Trotting in New Zealand and; ’ Australia will be run on the »metric system from August 1, 1973. The date was set at the Inter-Dominion Trotting Conference in Brisbane. The chief executive officer of the New South Wales Trotting Club (Mr L. Smith), said on Tuesday the nature of progression towards conversion was still up to the clubs. But he said it was likely they would begin by printing both the imperial distances and the metric equivalent in race books. Trotting is the first racing ! sport in Australia to announce a i deadline for the complete con- . version to the metric system. Mr Smith said surveyors would provide new starting points at the nearest 10 metres to the approximate imperial distances. “The only distance in trotting which will not be taken to the nearest 10 metres is the mile,” Mr Smith said. “It will remainsolidly at 1609 metres. The mile has been, and will remain, the distance by which greatness is measured in trotting.” The Australian Jockey Club will meet other principle race clubs of Australia during a special meeting over the Melbourne 1 Cup carnival in November to dis- ( cuss a date for the completion 1 of the metric conversion in rac- , ing.
