OBITUARY

Miss E. D. Fitz Way Miss Ermyn Dorothy FitzWay, who died in Christchurch recently, was secretary of the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury, from 1924 to 1969. In that time, she saw it grow from the Canterbury School of Art, when senior secondary school pupils attended Saturday morning classes, to a university faculty. She served under four directors —the late Messrs Archibald Nichol, Richard Wallwork, and Colin Lovell-Smith and the present director, Professor H. J. Simpson.

Besides her secretarial duties, Miss Fitz Way was responsible for the library in her early years at the school and she became very knowledgeable about the literature of art. She is remembered affectionately by students who turned to her for help and advice throughout her long period of service, including some who are now senior members of the staff.

When Miss Fitz Way retired a little more than two years ago, many fine tributes were paid to her by past and present staff members, and others associated with the University of Canterbury, for her outstanding work for the school and all concerned with it.

Miss Fitz Way is survived by her sister, Mrs A. H. Weir, of Christchurch.
