"Our trade is mainly agricultural,” he said. “Wool prices were depressingly low, and the terms of trade were moving against us as inflation put up the price of our imports.” In reply to a supplementary question from Dr A. M. Finlay (Lab., Henderson), Mr Marshall said the percentages he had given were in terms of value, not volume. Of the 14 per cent figure for world trade, about 7 per cent was the result of inflation, he said, and the proportion of the New Zealand figure would be comparable. New Zealand’s volume of exports rose by 6 per cent, and imports by 15 per cent.
