Pitt Island visit
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) WAITANGI, July 21.
The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) visited one of the most isolated New Zealand communities today, on Pitt Island, 12 miles southeast of Chatham Island.
For Sir Arthur Porritt, today’s trip fulfilled an ambition. Three years ago, when he was last in the Chathams, he was unable to fly by helicopter to Pitt Island because of bad weather. In 1968, the crayfish boom was in full swing and several helicopters were being used to take catches from boat to factory- Now no helicopters remain in the Chathams, and instead Sir Arthur Porritt made the journey in a fishing vessel.
