Concern about drug bills

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, July 21

Fears that increased penalties for drug offences, planned in four bills now being discussed by the Social Services Committee of Parliament, might hamper good work being done in Auckland, have persuaded Dr R. A. Roche to make official representations to the committee about the proposed legislation. Dr Roche, founder of the Society for Prevention of Drug Abuse, said he would probably go to Wellington next week to present submissions. He was disturbed that the proposals might drive young people away from the new society he has set up. "We have made contact with a large group of needleusers and they are starting to come forward for our help,” said Dr Roche. “We need some kind of assurance of non-interference if we are going to help them.”
