HOSPITAL FIRE
A small fire in a wall of the geriatric block under construction at Princess Margaret Hospital caused slight damage about 11.15 a.m. yesterday. One engine from Sydenham and two engines and the staff car from beadquarters attended.
A carbon dioxide extinguisher was used to put out an oven fire which caused no damage to a house occupied by Florence Yeatman, of 32 Neill Street, Hornby, about 10.40 am. yesterday. One engine from Sockbum attended.
An oven fire at a house at 68 Coleridge Street, Sydenham, occupied by Noel Rodgers, caused slight damage about 1.26 p.m. yesterday. One engine from Sydenham attended.
Prize award.— The Cowan Memorial Prize for promoting a high standard of historical journalism, has been awarded this year to Keith Eunson, of the “Otago Daily Times,” for his story on a gold robbery at Clyde in 1870. Con O’Leary, of the "Auckland Star,” is highly commended for his profile of the New Zealand historian Professor J. C. Beaglehole.(P.A.).
