‘Black leaders respected’

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 21.

President Nixon had respect for black leaders in both the United States and Africa, a White House spokesman said today. In Madrid during the weekend, Vice-President Spiro Agnew said that the leaders of Ethiopia, Kenya and the Congo had shown moderation and understanding of international problems. Many black leaders in the United States, by contrast, made “querulous complaints and constant recriminations against the rest of society.” Asked for comment today, Mr Nixon’s press secretary (Mr Ronald Zeigler) said that Mr Nixon had met black leaders both in America and in Africa, and would continue to meet them, because he had respect for them all.
