MEDICAL GRANTS

AUCKLAND, July 19.

Five new medical research grants were announced by the Medical Research Council in Auckland today. The five, together with a sixth announced earlier to Mr R. S. Oppenheim, of Auckland, for research into marijuana, carry a total value of $lOB,OOO, to be expended this year and next year. Two of the projects the council is supporting involve cancer studies. These will be made by Dr B. F. Cain, in Auckland, and Dr C. M. Goodall, in Dunedin. A grant is made to Professor J. S. Werry, of the Auckland University Medical School, for a study of career patterns of medical students. Professor J. A. R. Miles, of Dunedin, will study dengue fever in Fiji. Professor T. P. H. McKellar, of Dunedin, will carry out a psychological study into marijuana, studying the effects of the drug on individuals in controlled conditions.
