Third tour to Merckx

The Belgian rider, E. Merckx, became only the third man to win the Tour de France cycle race three times in succession. He won the final stage. Merckx completed the 2237-mile race 9min 51sec clear of J. Zoetemelk, of the Netherlands, who took second place for the second year running. The Dutchman went ahead of another Belgian, L. van Impe, after lying third at the start of the final 33.4-mile time trial from Versailles to the Vincennes velodrome.
