Teeth loss
GISBORNE. The old song about the child wanting his two front teeth for Christmas will probably become one of J. E. Slattery’s favourite melodies for the remainder of the Lions tour of New Zealand. The Irish flanker is to lose his two in an operation in Auckland later this week.
Slattery’s front teeth were loosened when he was struck in the mouth during the game against Canterbury. Through an oversight, he had left his mouthguard in the dressing room.
Since then he has wom a mouthguard almost all the time in an effort to set the teeth back in position. But another knock on the mouth in the Hawke’s Bay game meant the failure of the experiment. Slattery is not alone in his predicament The experienced English journalist, Mr P. Marshall, of the “Daily Express” yesterday had two of his upper teeth removed by a Gisborne dental surgeon. During a bout of passing with a fellow writer, Mr D. Frost of the “Guardian” in Napier, Mr Marshall took his eyes off the ball for an instant and was struck in the mouth. Two of his teeth were loosened considerably, and he was in pain for several days.
