After Essex had been shot out for 125 in 35 overs, the Worcestershire openers, G. Turner, of New Zealand, and the West Indian, R. Headley (57 not out) put on 76 for the first wicket to place their county within sight of victory.

A crow'd of 18,000 at Leeds saw, Lancashire, the holder of the: John Player title, beat its old enemy, Yorkshire, by 48 runs. I Results: At Folkestone: Kent beat Leicestershire by nine wickets.
