CHARGE OF ARSON

Man found not guilty

John Bede Lagan, aged 43, a company manager, was found not guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of arson. Mr Justice Beattie discharged Lagan. Lagan pleaded not guilty to a charge of wilfully setting fire to a house at 3 Hills Road, owned by himself and his brother, on August 29, 1970. Messrs P. G. S. Penlington and G. K. Panckhurst appeared for the Crown, and Messrs R. McClelland and W. H. McMenamin for the accused.

The jury took two hours to reach its verdict. The trial began on Wednesday. In a previous trial the jury failed to reach a verdict.
