Smoke fills engine cab

The crew of a south-bound goods trains had to leave their engine cab when smoke filled the cab as the train was approaching Winslow, about seven miles from Ashburton, at 10.45 on Wednesday evening. Thick, black oily smoke forced the three men to stop the engine and leave the train. One of the men telephoned the Hinds railway station where a north-bound goods train was waiting for the line to clear. The engine from this train was uncoupled and went to Winslow, where it was linked with the goods waggons from the crippled engine and took them south. Later, in the evening a south-bound train from Christchurch uncoupled its waggons and returned north with the damaged engine. The smoke is believed to have come from a defective turbo blower.
