Volleyball tourney

1 A fair sampling of New Zealand's leading volleyball piay- | ers will be competing in | Christchurch this week-end. The occasion is the annual Canterbury University invitation tournament, which starts this afternoon at the Y.M.C.A. and at Riccarton High School. It will continue tomorrow and other venues being used are the gymnasiums at Ham and in the city. the host, Canterbury University, at present holds the position of second ranking nationally I for both men’s and women’s A teams However, the men’s team, including the New Zealand representatives, G. Congdon, and Canterbury University blues holders in G. Tritt and D. Hall, will be faced by tough competition, particularly from Eagles of Wellington, whose leading player is New Zealand’s top-ranked J. Hall. Eagles were placed third at the New Zealand tournament in 1970, and recently beat Canterbury at an invitation tournament in Palmerston North. Both the men’s and women s teams from Palmerston North have been selected as the best from among the various clubs and should represent a strong

team. In particular, the women's’team will provide powerful oppo-7 - ' sition to the Canterbury women’s - team. Although led by the NewyZealand representatives M. Hor-j*’ lor and A. Farmer, and placed, second in the country in it has not been playing up standard recently, losing to both the top Palmerston North teams J only three weeks ago. The two teams from Nelson Y.M.C.A. are unfortunate in that* this tournament falls in their offx,; season, volleyball being a sum- c met sport in Nelson. However;/ they are expected to field strong, teams in spite of clashes with. ’ winter sporting fixtures. Christchurch teams to be com*. ; peting are Canterbury University. „ men’s A.
