Parking ban at Ham university entrance

Described by the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) as the first stage in a programme to improve parking on streets round the University of Canterbury at Ham, no-parking restrictions on both sides of Creyke Road at the university’s north-west entrance were applied last evening by the Waimairi County Council.

The council asked the Christchurch Transport Board to move its Creyke Road bus stop to the west side of the north-east entrance and, if the board is agreeable, decided to impose another no-stopping zone on either side of the road. The finance committee reported on discussions between university and council staff and said a report from the university’s committee on safety had been considered. It made recommendations in line with the council’s decisions.

The report referred to the danger to passengers on buses from the city having to cross the university driveway, which created an unnecessary hazard and traffic conflict. In the case of the northwest entrance, vehicles parked on Creyke Road obscure visibility for drivers leaving the university, the hazard being increased because the entrance is lower than the road, and the curve in Creyke Road reduces the

warning of approaching vehicles. “There have been numerous reports of dangerous situations occurring at this entrance,” said the report. “Heavy traffic into and out of the university also coincides with heavy flows on Creyke Road.” It was agreed that twohour parking zones in Creyke and Ham roads would be unjustified, and ineffective unless there was “substantial enforcement.” Extension.—A month’s extension was granted on a building permit issued to Wardellan Investments, Ltd, to build motels at 447 Memorial Avenue to enable the firm to apply to the Christchurch Drainage Board for a sewer connection. The chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) said he objected strongly if the board agreed to connect a commercial property by a private sewer when there were house properties outside the urban fence that the board would not accept.
