Earthquake tremors

An earthquake recorded at the Canterbury Museum at 6.19 on Wednesday evening was described' by the Seismological Observatory in Wellington as “large and distant.”

Mr M. A. Lowry at the observatory said that the earthquake was sufficiently large and dose enough to have

overloaded the equipment for observing distant tremors. So far there was no indication of where the quake had occurred.

Mr D. R. Gregg of the Canterbury Museum said that the earthquake was a little peculiar because it had disturbed the recorder for three-quart-ers of an hour, which showed it to be distant, but there were other parts of the recording which indicated it to be local.

Another earthquake felt in Hokitika at 3.59 a.m. yesterday was not recorded at the museum, said Mr Gregg. ,
